About Us
One particular evening stands out in my memory. It was a chilly night, and the wind howled outside our small, cozy home. My grandmother and I were sitting by the fireplace, the warmth of the flames contrasting with the cold outside. She handed me a stick of incense and said, “Today, you will learn how to cleanse our home.”

When I was a little girl I remember that my grandmother would burn some wood in an urn and let the smoke fill the house and her little shop, often times this would lead to mild coughing or sneezing in some people while others would leave the area entirely, after this she would then sweep the area and say a prayer. So growing up a d even now, our home is always filled with the comforting scent of incense. My grandmother believed that burning incense could cleanse the house of negative energy and bring peace to our lives. Every evening, she would light a stick of sandalwood incense, and the fragrant smoke would curl through the air, creating a serene atmosphere.
One particular evening stands out in my memory. It was a chilly night, and the wind howled outside our small, cozy home. My grandmother and I were sitting by the fireplace, the warmth of the flames contrasting with the cold outside. She handed me a stick of incense and said, “Today, you will learn how to cleanse our home.” With her gentle guidance, I lit the incense and walked through each room, waving the stick in slow, deliberate motions. As the smoke filled the air, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. My grandmother explained that the incense was not just for cleansing the house but also for clearing our minds and hearts of any negativity.
Years later, I see my granddaughter, following in our family’s footsteps. She has taken up the practice of using incense to cleanse her home and to meditate. Watching her, I am reminded of those evenings with my grandmother, and I feel a deep connection to our family’s traditions. One day, I sat down with my granddaughter and shared the story of my childhood. I told her about the winter night when I first learned to use incense and how it brought peace to our home. She listened intently, her eyes wide with curiosity and wonder.
After hearing my story, my granddaughter decided to create her own ritual. She chose lavender incense for its calming properties and began using it during her meditation sessions. As the fragrant smoke filled her room, she felt a sense of tranquility and connection to her ancestors. Through this simple practice, my granddaughter and I have found a way to bridge the generations, honoring our family’s traditions while creating new memories. The scent of incense now fills her home, just as it did mine, bringing with it a sense of peace and continuity. The burning of herbs, resins, and wood has been a universal practice across many cultures for creating sacred spaces, aiding in meditation, and promoting healing.
One of the earliest written records of smoke cleansing comes from the Vedas. These ancient Hindu texts written in Sanskrit detail the use of incense as a healing tool to support recovery from illness and, equally important, to create a clean, peaceful, nurturing space in which to heal. Weknow, however, that long before the Vedas documented this use of smoke cleansing, people throughout the ancient world burned herbs to create sweet-smelling smoke in their temples, in their home alters, and in places of healing.
